Are you hitting the open road this summer? Whether taking a cross-country road trip or just driving to the mountains, it's important to be prepared for long drives. Road trips can be a great way to explore a new area, spend quality time with family, and make amazing memories. However, a lack of preparation can lead to an uncomfortable journey. Here is an essential checklist for preparing for long drives:

1. Get your vehicle ready - Ensure your car or truck is up-to-date on maintenance and inspection. Get an oil change, check the tires and brakes, and top off all fluids. It's also a good idea to get your car checked out by a mechanic before taking any long trips.

Make one last check of the following items before packing up:

  • Fill up on gas before hitting the road
  • Check your tire pressure and treads
  • Clean windows, mirrors, and headlights
  • Make sure both high and low beam headlights are working.
  • Oil, power steering, and brake fluid are topped off.
  • Check that the heater and/or air conditioner are working.

2. Pack a car survival kit - Assemble a road trip kit that includes:

  • Flashlight
  • Jumper cables
  • First-aid kit
  • Spare tire and tools to change it
  • Raincoat or poncho
  • Towels and rags
  • Emergency flares
  • A chain or thick towing rope
  • Basic tools like wrenches and screwdrivers

You may want to pack some snacks and beverages, too, as convenience stores may not be available along the route.

3. Plan your route - Get familiar with your route so you stay aware of the journey. Map out rest stops and attractions you'd like to visit and research the cost of tolls. It's also good to ensure your route avoids bad weather or traffic issues.

4. Double-check your documents - Ensure you have all necessary documents, such as your driver's license, vehicle registration, and insurance. Also, check that the vehicle's insurance coverage is up-to-date for your trip.

List of documents:

  • Driver's license
  • Vehicle registration
  • Insurance card
  • State inspection sticker (if required)
  • Map of the area you will be visiting

5. Prepare for emergencies - It's best to be prepared for emergencies, such as getting a flat tire, running out of gas, or getting lost. Have a list of emergency numbers and services in case you need assistance. These include your auto insurance provider, roadside assistance, the nearest police station, and a local hospital.

6. Stay safe - Keep yourself and your passengers safe by following road rules and regulations. Wear seatbelts, reduce distractions, avoid driving when tired or under the influence, and pay attention to other drivers on the road.

Creating a checklist for your next long drive can help you stay prepared, safe, and comfortable. With proper planning and preparation, road trips can be a great way to explore new places with friends or family.

Follow this essential checklist for preparing for long drives, and make sure you have an enjoyable journey. Happy travels!
